I am a qualified civil and structural engineer and have previously worked as a building technician, but I had always had a boyhood dream of working with engines. What attracted me was the technical and complex elements of the product together with the dynamic aspect of working with engines. I had heard of the old B&W shipyard but did not know in advance that B&W and MAN Diesel & Turbo  were the same company. It was clearly the product that I found attractive when I decided to apply for a job with the company in spring 2008. I now work as a test engineer in the test department and I am very enthusiastic about working here. I had previously worked in a number of smaller companies, which I must say is a completely different experience from where I am now. MAN Diesel & Turbo is a large company with lots of resources, which is something I obviously notice. I hope this will be the only place I will ever work as I really feel comfortable about working here. I can absolutely recommend it.

We are approx. 35 people in my department and we measure pressure, temperature, motion and mechanical load in our engines. To do this we use different sensors and other measurement tools. We do this for instance on our test engines in Copenhagen, or we visit the ships themselves or our licensees – most often in Korea or Japan. I typically have four annual trips of this kind, which take around three weeks each. This can however vary, depending on what we have been asked to test. When we return from this type of trip, we document the trip in a report, which we submit to the people who have requested the testing. The make-up of the department provides an average age of 30-40 years of age. I am 52 and fit well with the group. We have a very relaxed and informal tone but, at the same time, we are extremely professional. The company is very quality-conscious and our motto is that only the best is good enough!

I really like the fact that there is room for everyone at MAN Diesel & Turbo – both generalists and specialists. It is the perfect place to develop your professional skills as resources are assigned to this and you are encouraged to develop your competencies as an employee. Of course, being a large company that is going well also means something. From my own point of view, it’s great to have the opportunity to travel as much as I do in my job. It is a new adventure every time and I get the chance to experience other environments than the Danish. For me the job at MAN Diesel & Turbo is a dream come true.
