06.06.2003 - At the end of January 2002, a German customer placed an order with MAN Turbo for the supply of a fuel gas compressor station for the gas turbine test stand at its Berlin works. The fuel gas station enables the customer to supply its gas turbines in the 180-240 MW class with fuel gas directly from the municipal gas supply system. Prior to commissioning of the installation, gas turbines at the Berlin plant were tested using oil, which is less economical. Thanks to the extensive flexibility of the gas supply system, test runs that were very costly in the past can be carried out at different fuel gas temperatures in future.

The type RG035/05 natural gas compressor system is driven by an electric motor with a rated output of 7,300 kW. On the intake side, the compressor is connected directly to the Berlin municipal gas supply network via suitable safety shut-off valves. The compressor increases the gas pressure from 4.5-10 bar absolute to the discharge pressure of 28-35 bar absolute required for the gas turbine combustion chamber. Regulating the cooling output of the interstage cooler and the aftercooler means that gas temperatures in the range from 35°C to over 200°C can be preselected for the feed into the turbine combustion chamber.
All the auxiliary units required to operate the station, such as the oil, hydraulic oil and nitrogen supply systems, the complete compressor control system in case of gas turbine overspeed and machine control system for operation of the installation, all the action required for acceptance of the station in accordance with the stringent guidelines of the Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches e.V. (German Technical & Scientific Association for Gas and Water - DVGW), and erection and commissioning of the station as a whole using the MAN TURBO´s staff formed part of the order placed with MAN Turbo.

Its extensive and varied experience of fuel gas supply systems for power station turbines incorporating integrally geared compressor stations of the same or a similar design makes MAN Turbo a competent and reliable partner, even for the highly specialised test stand requirements of our client. The compact construction of the station and compressor enabled the customer to realize the installation in the limited space available in the Berlin works without any great difficulty. The customer´s proximity to MAN TURBO´s production plant in Berlin is another advantage working in the customer´s favour in the construction and operation of a reliable fuel gas supply station.
