06.06.2003 - In October 2000, MAN Turbo received an order to supply three compressor packages for storing natural gas in the USA. The HOFIM™ Sealed compressors are hermetically sealed, oil-free turbocompressors with a fast-running electric motor and magnetic bearing assembly.
The installation was commissioned successfully in 2001.

To even out seasonal variations in demand by gas consumers, gas that is not required is stored and then taken from the natural gas storage facility at times of peak demand. Compressors can be used here to store and tap the gas in the storage facility. On storage, the gas that is not required is withdrawn from the pipeline and compressed to storage pressure. If the storage pressure falls below the pipeline pressure, the compressors are needed to increase it.

In view of the changing storage conditions, the demands made on the flexibility of the compressors are high. The HOFIM™ Sealed compressor offers essentially leak-, wear- and maintenance-free remote operation with a large variation in throughput, yet with a high level of availability, low noise level and the absence of emissions. The compact design of the HOFIM™ Sealed guarantees a small footprint and an economical operating concept with relatively low investment costs.
